Lip Service 03:54
Fiction dogs starving, words are wasted Trying to feed them empty sound Sit up all night, talking and smoking Count the dead and wait ‘til morning comes You said--”It is a tiny glimmer but its a glimmer all the same I am just a simple man, hear you calling my name.” He was such a trip, he was hardly there Leaving me hanging with that uneven stare Didn’t order your lip service I didn’t order your lip service I didn’t order your lip service Didn’t order your lip service Didn’t order your lip service I didn’t order your lip service I didn’t order your lip service Didn’t order your lip service I ain’t no hired gun, still got my dignity Everyone’s reaching for a piece Of a man who ain’t got no civility Won’t give my days to wait on bended knee (123) While you’re looking in the mirror at someone I can’t see It is a tiny glimmer but its a glimmer all the same I am just a simple man, hear you calling my name. (Comes in later 12) While you burn all your bridges, and the surrounding towns ‘Till everything comes tumbling down Didn’t order your lip service I didn’t order your lip service I didn’t order your lip service Didn’t order your lip service Didn’t order your lip service I didn’t order your lip service I didn’t order your lip service Didn’t order your lip service There’s one thing that was never said When the only thing left was the back of your head Walking away like it made sense Leaving your lies like some game of chance Come on get your money and run, run, run You won’t clear your name leaving me undone Get the hell out of town change your name You’ll never find me knocking at your door again

about

Lip Service is a ballad of fury of a lover done wrong. The red velvet curtains of the song part in an explosion of unabashed frustration and cryptic metaphor depicting a man of empty promises and rife with lies. It may look good on the outside but all that glitters isn’t gold and the pursuit of this gold rush results in desolation and disappointment:

“Fiction dogs starving, words are wasted, trying to feed them empty sound. Sit up all night, talking and smoking, count the dead and wait ‘till morning comes. It’s a tiny glimmer, it’s a glimmer all the same. Well I’m just a simple man, hear you calling my name. He was such a trip, he was hardly there--leaving me hanging with that uneven stare.”

The disappointment drives the song forward with energetic rush of your new favorite pop song and the performativity and ferocity of Lady Gaga. The refrain of this song won’t leave your head for days: “Didn’t order your lip-service!” You know this song already. You know this song well. This tune is the hymn of the ghosted and the battle cry of those who know they deserve something better. It’s the song we’ve written 10,000 times in pursuit of happiness, the song we howl to the back of the head of someone leaving, the song we shout at the top of our lungs to remember our worth when we wash our life of someone unworthy. The song that plays when we dress in drag and strut across the stage. We don’t care if the song’s subject is sitting in the audience. If you do a songstress wrong, you too may have a song written about you.

All we ask: Be decent. Be kind to each other. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to the world. We don’t want to hear it. We didn’t order your lip service.
